Cheapest time to fly to Singapore

A less crowded and more budget-friendly time to fly to Singapore is from May to August. The most expensive month for flights is December.

Changi Airport (SIN)

Changi Airport is the main airport in Singapore and it is a tourist destination by itself. Changi is home to green spaces and several gardens, having also a 40-metre-high waterfall called HSBC Rain Vortex. The airport offer a number of attractions including a maze garden, a beautiful bridge with a view to the waterfall, and some children activities.

You can get to the city centre by train. From the Changi Airport you can take take the MRT which is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to get around Singapore city. There is no direct line from Changi to the city centre, so the route requires a change at Tanah Merah Station to the 'green line' train heading Westbound. Remember to check which stop is the closest to your hotel. The journey takes around 30 minutes by train.

The City Shuttle will bring passengers to most downtown hotels at a rate of $9 per adult or $6 per child (below 12 years of age). The shuttle departs every 15 minutes and takes around 25 minutes to get to the centre of the city.

Taxis are available for hire at the taxi stands in the Arrival areas of each terminal. A ride to the city centre takes around 30 minutes and costs between $20 and $40. All fares are metered and an extra 25% may be applied to any fare within peak hours, and a 50% extra for fares between midnight and 6:00am.

Uber isn't available in Singapore but there is a similar app used there called Grab. Grab offers four kinds of vehicles: GrabCar, Grabcar Premium, 6-seater (Economy) and 6-seater (Premium). The fare will be different depending on the car category.

Getting Around Singapore

The best way you can get yourself around Singapore is by subway, the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system is the fastest way to zip around the city. Visitors can get a EZ-Link card which allows you to travel on the subway. The Singapore Tourist Pass (STP) will allow you to travel as many times as you want for one day ($10), two days ($16) or three days ($20), and can be purchased at the MRT Stations.

Another way to get around the city is by the public buses which are recommended to first-time visitors as you can get a pretty good look at the city. The fare is based on the distance travelled, so remember to tap your card when you get in and when you are about to get off.

Getting a taxi in Singapore can be a good way to go to places that are not accessible by subway or bus. They are metered and can be quite expensive. To get a rough idea about the final fare, ask the driver for the surcharges and remember to ask for a receipt at the end of the trip.
